Isaac Mwaura reinstated as MP 7 months after being kicked out by Jubilee

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka has reinstated Isaac Mwaura to the Senate as nominated MP, seven months since he was kicked out by the ruling party Jubilee.

On Wednesday, May 12, Mwaura was expelled after joining United Democratic Alliance, a party associated with Deputy President William Ruto.

The Jubilee party had then picked former Samburu Senator Sammy Leshore to replace Mwaura’s position at the Senate prompting Mwaura to move to the High Court to challenge the decision where he secured favorable judgement.

And on  Wednesday, December 1, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka readmitted Mwaura back to the Senate stating that he was obligated by the recent court judgment that nullified his expulsion from the Jubilee party.

“….and further the High Court has quashed gazette notice no. 4598 dated May 11, 2021, by the chairperson of IEBC which appointed Sammy Prisa Leshore to replace Isaac Mwaura as a member of the senate representing People With Disabilities (PWDs),

“I, therefore, direct that Isaac Mwaura Maigua remains as Senator in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and the Senate Standing Orders,” the speaker said.

Speaking moments after he was reinstated, the outspoken politician said his reinstatement was historical as nothing of the sort has ever happened in the history of Kenya where a seat is declared vacant, a replacement gazette, only for the same to be reversed by the court.

“This is a novelty, indeed a landmark ruling that sets precedence going forward in not only protecting the independence of parliament but ensuring that nobody shall be victimized purely based on their political opinion or association,” he said in a statement to Newsrooms.
