Jimmy Wanjigi: Uhuru-Raila handshake has destroyed ODM party

by Enock Ndayala

Presidential hopeful Jimmy Wanjigi has accused the Uhuru-Raila handshake of destroying democracy in the opposition party.

Speaking to KTN News on Monday, October 25, the politician-cum-businessman said since the 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the party has never witnessed the democracy its party members had before.

“This Uhuru-Raila handshake is as if it has come to destroy this party. It is as if it aims to destroy our ODM party,” Wanjigi said.

Wanjigi who has expressed interest to battle ODM party leader Raila Odinga for the ODM presidential ticket further insisted that the party lacks equality.

“Indeed there is no democracy in ODM and it is because of these conmen around the party headquarters pretending to be pro-democracy,” Wanjigi went on in a scathing attack at one of Kenya’s oldest and biggest political party with nationwide representation.

Last month, Wanjigi demanded immediate changes to the ODM party leadership accusing some of the party officials of fighting democracy within the party.

He said there were some party officials who are rattled by his entrance into the race for the ODM presidential ticket as well as the changes he has been demanding in the party.

“We are not going to allow a few officials to undermine the democratic basis and foundation of this party. And if they play with us, they will see. We will sweep them all away completely,” Wanjigi said in reference to a section of ODM party officials.

After the party’s National Election Board (NEB) chair Catherine Mumma announced that they had abandoned plans to hold grassroots elections and instead asked branches to pick officials through consensus, Wanjigi urged the party to guarantee all presidential aspirants a free and fair nomination exercise.

“And we tell our ODM party that democracy must be guaranteed to all presidential aspirants. We will not accept this absurdity of hiding in board rooms and evading democracy,” Wanjigi said.
