Jubilee party vice-chairman: Kenya will experience its Mandela moment with Raila as president

by Enock Ndayala

Uhuru Kenyatta’s confidante and Jubilee party vice-chairman David Murathe believes Kenya needs a Raila presidency in 2022 since Deputy President Willliam Ruto does not have Kenya’s best interest at heart.

The outspoken former MP also suggests Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula, and Gideon Moi will eventually team up with the ODM leader before the 2022 General Election.

“It is highly likely that One Kenya Alliance will finally link up with Jakom (Raila Odinga). It is in their best interest to work together. The other one (William Ruto) does not have the best interest of the country at heart. Through Raila as president, the country will experience its Mandela moment,” he said as quoted by Sunday Nation newspaper.

One Kenya Alliance is a newly formed political outfit bringing together four perceived regional leaders; Musalia Mudavadi of ANC, Moses Wetangula of Ford-K, Gideon Moi of KANU, and Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper party.

With the exception of Gideon Moi, the other three have worked with Raila before with their latest partnership being the run-up to the 2017 General Election under the National Super Alliance (NASA).

They have however since fallen out with the ODM leader accusing him of being selfish and never wanting to endorse and support either of them for the presidency as they did for him twice.

Murathe’s statement comes days after ODM said it is working on an alliance that will shake Kenya’s politics.

“Knowing that partnerships are an essential part of our politics, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is also working on a broader, better, and bolder alliance that will shake the country and shape the politics of the land for years to come,” said the statement signed by ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna.

There has also been speculation President Uhuru and influential power brokers are seeking to isolate Raila Odinga and make it difficult for him to win the presidency in 2022.

Wiliam Ruto, Raila Odinga
Ruto and Raila once formed a strong force, alongside other three politicians, which come second in the highly disputed 2007 General Election and there is speculation they could team up too for 2022.

KIVUMBi.co.ke understands One Kenya Alliance is one such anti-Raila strategy whose aim is to lock the ODM leader out of the Ukambani, Western, and the Rift valley voting block.

There is also talk of President Uhuru backing the formation of a coast political party to have the region vote as a block in 2022. Raila receives a lot of support from this region.

The move occasioned criticism from ODM camp as well as from Deputy President William Ruto who said Kenya is beyond regional/tribal political parties.

It raised speculation Ruto and Raila might team up to form a strong political alliance to rival One Kenya Alliance, a partnership many consider very formidable.
