Jubilee party led by President Uhuru Kenyatta wants more than 100 MPs who are allied to the Deputy President William Ruto to lose their seats before the August General Election.
In a report by The People Daily, the ruling party has already initiated the process to kick out over 100 rebel lawmakers who have abandoned the party that sponsored them to parliament.
Most of the targeted lawmakers have since defected to Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party before the expiry of their terms in Parliament.
The party’s Vice Chairman, David Murathe told The People Daily that they will be relying on Section 14A and 14B of the Political Parties Act on membership resignation, court advisories, and Article 103 of the Constitution.
According to these provisions, MPs automatically lose their elective positions if they stop being members of the political parties that sponsored them during the elections, by either resigning or being expelled.
“We have elected members who have resigned from our party and have done it through writing. What we (Jubilee) are doing now is that we are synchronizing the list with that of the Registrar of Political Parties and once we get the list of those who have quit — because they are supposed to notify the Registrar of Political Parties of their resignation — we will write to the Houses and they will have no option but to declare the positions vacant,” Murathe told The People Daily.
Speaking on KTN News on Wednesday, March 16, Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni revealed that, they will not only seek their removal but also the affected MPs must refund the money received on the strength of being Jubilee MPs.
“It is important for the public to know that any amount paid to MPs or MCAs which were not supposed to be paid will be recovered,” Kioni said.
If the party succeeds, more MPs and MCAs mainly from President Uhuru’s backyard will lose their seats four months to the elections.
Notable lawmakers that might lose their seats include, Rigathi Gachagua, Moses Kuria Alice Wahome, Ndindi Nyoro, Susan Kihika, Kipchumba Murkomen among others.
