Julius Malema warns Raila against constantly challenging elections results

by Enock Ndayala

On Monday, August 22, Kenya’s veteran politician Raila Odinga filed a petition challenging election results that saw William Ruto declared the fifth President-elect.

Raila’s move to file the petition at the Supreme Court happened just days after he rejected the results of Kenya’s presidential election saying that the figures announced by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati on Monday, August 15, were null and void.

This makes it the fourth time Raila was rejecting Presidential election results. It is only in 1997 when Raila concede defeat to late President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.

But South Africa’s Leader of the opposition party Julius Malema on Tuesday, August 23, warned the Azimio la Umoja One- Kenya Coalition party captain Raila Odinga against his love for disputing presidential elections.

In a press conference, Malema said history will harshly judge Kenya’s longest-serving opposition leader if he continues to challenge presidential elections.

“We call on Raila to accept the outcome of the elections and not form part of a tradition of causing instability and uncertainty on African governance,” Malema said.

Malema, who is known for his stand on Pan-Africanism, instead advised the former Prime Minister to work with President-elect William Ruto to form a government that will address the challenge facing Kenyans.

“Odinga must humble himself and form part of a government that will address the challenges confronting the people of Kenya and not allow history to remember him as an individual who was desperate for power at the cost of his nation’s progress,” Malema said.

Raila first disputed the 2007/08 General Election in which the then Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) Chairman Samuel Kiviutu declared Mwai Kibaki the president-elect only to be sworn in at night.

In 2013, Raila once again protested the presidential election at the Supreme Court after losing to retiring President Uhuru Kenyatta. However, the Apex Court reinstated the IEBC verdict.

The Supreme Court overturned President Uhuru’s win for the first time after Raila petitioned the announcement of Uhuru Kenyatta as the president-elect.
