Yeye anatumia nyumba ya serikali kupiga siasa: Junet hits at Ruto for calling out CSs for engaging in politics

by Amos Khaemba

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has differed with Deputy President William Ruto over the involvement of civil servants more so Cabinet Secretaries in the 2022 polls.

Recently UDA party through its Secretary-general Veronica Maina wrote to the DPP Noordin Haji seeking the prosecution of 5 cabinet secretaries and one principal secretary for engaging in active politics.

According to the Constitution and related election laws, state officers are prohibited from engaging in any political activity that may compromise the political neutrality of their office.

Speaking at Bomas of Kenya, after his clearance by the IEBC, the Kenya Kwanza alliance presidential flag bearer William Ruto challenged the Chebukati-led commission to ensure state officers do not influence the outcome of their August polls.

A day after Ruto’s comments, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has hit back accusing the Kenya Kwanza alliance supremo of hypocrisy.

Speaking in Kibera Constituency on Sunday June 5, during the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition rally, Junet said DP Ruto has been using government resources to advance his political ambition.

“Anasema mawaziri wengine wanapiga siasa wakati yeye mwenyewe anapiga siasa kwa nyumba ya serikali, hana nyumba yake. Anatembea na magari na ndege za seriakali, hana zake. Yeye hana habari kuwa bunge ilipitisha sheria inayoitwa leadership and integrity act inayoruhusu mawaziri na CESs kufanya siasa. Kama hujasoma rudi kwa shule some,” Junet said.

Loosely translated to, “He says some ministers are engaging in politics when he is using his official residence to engage in politics,8 he has no house. He walks with cars and helicopters funded by the government. He has no information that the parliament passed a law called the Leadership and Integrity Act that allows the ministers and CESs to make politics. If you have not read go back to school and read,”

Among the state officers Ruto’s team wants prosecuted are Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, Joe Mucheru of ICT, James Macharia of Transport and Infrastructure, Devolutions’ Eugene Wamalwa, Peter Munya of Agriculture, and Interior PS Karanja Kibicho.

“The Cabinet Secretaries and the Principal Secretary being state officers are in breach of Section 15 of the Election Offences Act, 2016 for using their offices to engage in active support of the Azimio Coalition Presidential candidate and for publicly indicating their support for their preferred candidate,” Ruto’s party said.
