Kenya’s President William Ruto on Tuesday, August 1, lamented that a section of Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries were incompetent.
The head of State who was speaking during the contract signing at State House said some of the CSs and PS were not even aware of what their responsibilities are despite having several months in their dockets.
“I call many PSs and ask them what is going on… they have no clue… and that is your department. That is the job that you have,” the president said.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua later on in the day accused some CSs and PSs of having an appetite for foreign trips, something that had made them incompetent in their duties.
However, former Mukurweini Member of Parliament Kabando wa Kabando defended senior government officials accused of being incompetent.
Kabando instead said that the President and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua are the ones who are incompetent.
“Ruto was complaining today. What does he want us to do as citizens, he’s the president, the head of government. There is no cabinet Secretary who can exit the border of Kenya without written permission from the president,
“… so the incompetence is not on the CS or PS, it’s on the president and his deputy,” Kabando said during an interview on NTV on Tuesday, August 1.
Public Policy analyst Raphael Obonyo further supported Kabando wa Kabando’s remarks saying the president and his deputy are the ones to carry the burden for the incompetency of senior government officials.
Obonyo said Ruto and Gachagua chose loyalties to fill up the cabinet position and left out competent Kenyans who would help him deliver his pre-election pledges.
“As the president blames the cabinet, he must also blame himself because he chose to reward loyalty in the appointments,” he said.
