Kakamega governor to be installed Luhya spokesperson

by Enock Ndayala

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is on Friday, December 31, expected to be installed as the Luhya spokesperson ahead of the 2022 General Election.

This is after a section of leaders organizing for the event on Monday, December 27, disclosed that plans to instill the outgoing governor are at advanced stages.

The ODM deputy party leader is expected to dethrone the Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi who was in 2016 named the Luhya spokesperson.

While COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli said the Bukhungu II meeting will be an affair of the Luhya nations, it is suspected that the trade unionist is expected to rally the Mulembe nation behind the former premier Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

Yesterday, ODM leader Raila Odinga confirmed that he will attend the Bukhungu II meeting.

It is suspected that the move to instill Oparanya as the Luhya spokesperson has elicited sharp reactions from a section of Luhya leaders who have since threatened to paralyse the meeting.

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala said the Bukhungu II meeting will not go on as planned unless the vocal unionists get permission from ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi.

“You all know that Kakamega is my political territory. I want to tell the organizers of the said meeting that they must seek Mudavadi’s permission or else their meeting will not happen,

“But because Mudavadi has not given me a nod to allow them to convene their forum, I have officially called it off and no such meeting will happen at the Bukhungu Stadium on Friday, December 31,” Malala said.

Mudavadi was endorsed Luhya spokesperson in 2016 after a survey that rated him the most popular politician followed closely by Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya while Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula emerged third.
