Kakamega senator condemns Anglican Archbishop Jackson ole Sapit for banning politicians from church

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has castigated Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit for banning politicians from politicking in church.

Speaking to on Sunday, September 12, after Ole Sapit said the church is not a place for political rhetoric, the ANC politician argued that banning politicians from churches would discriminate against them and asked the Archbishop to relook at his pronouncement so as to allow everybody to worship freely.

Malala urged Ole Sapit to emulate the Biblical teachings where Jesus Christ allowed prostitutes and thieve in the church and as such allow politicians to speak in church.

“Even Jesus allowed thieves and prostitutes in Church. Therefore the modern church cannot be the one discriminating,” Malala said.

On Sunday, September 12, Sapit who was attending the consecration of Rose Okeno as the Bishop of the Butere Diocese at the Butere Girls Secondary School Kakamega County barred ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his ODM counterpart Raila Odinga from addressing the faithful.

He stated that he would not allow any political comments in the church, adding leaders would only be allowed to worship at the church and leave quietly just like other members of the congregation.

“So what I will do is this, I will read the names of all our members, whom we respect so much, leaders of our society who have come to grace the occasion, and if you want to address the press, they will address when the service is ended,” he declared.

His pronouncement has since elicited sharp reactions from politicians with a section of them supporting the move while others have criticising it.

Central Organization for Trade Union boss Francis Atwoli lauded the move asking the church leaders to extend the same to funerals.

“I want to thank Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit for his directive that no politicians should politick in worship places and it should even be extended to funerals,” Atwoli said.

It comes at a time when politicians have taken over church pulpits where they easily find a congregation especially after a ban on political gatherings.

Raila Odinga, William Ruto, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Musalia Mudavadi are among senior politicians who have recently been using the church to advance their 2022 presidential campaigns.
