The debate about the validity of Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala’s university degree hit headlines for the better part of last week.

This was after the vocal lawmaker shared copies of his academic credentials to discredit the naysayers who had for long cast doubts on his academic credentials as he seeks to be Kakamega county governor.

While the legislator thought that he was bringing to an end claims by his opponents, the war had just begun as he was dragged down the mad by his critics as Kivumbi.co.ke reported here

It is important to remember that candidates vying for gubernatorial positions are required to have degree certificates from recognised institution- locally or internationally.

For Malala, the questions over the validity of his papers will keep on lingering, especially after a voter took the matter to court, seeking to bar him from vying.

On Friday, June 3, the voter moved to court seeking to bar the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from clearing Kakamega the outspoken politician because he does ‘not have a degree certificate.’

In the petition filed at the Milimani High Court Constitutional and Human Rights Division, Fred Muka alleged that Senator Malala’s USIU degree certificate has inconsistencies, irregularities, and contradictions.

Through lawyer Duncan Okatch, Fred Muka further said that the legislator’s KCSE certificate from Kamusinga High School is also not genuine.

“Pending the hearing and determination of this application, the court be pleased to issue orders restraining IEBC from entertaining, considering, processing, evaluating, clearing, and registering Malala as the gubernatorial candidate for Kakamega county ahead of the general elections for August 9, 2022,” reads the court papers in part.

In a recent interview, Senator Malala was put to task to explain why his certificate read 2019 yet he claims to have graduated sometime between 2010 and 2011.

Malala is expected to square it out with former KETRACO CEO Fernandes Barasa of the ODM party.
