Kakamega senator: Police officers should be school drop outs ‘Kushika bunduki tu’

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has sensationally asked graduates to keep off National Police Service (NPS) jobs.

Speaking in Khwisero, Kakamega County on Tuesday, May 24, the outspoken legislator said the job should be a preserve of school dropouts and the less literate.

Malala speaking during a Kenya Kwanza rally as they seek to lock 70 percent of western votes to 2022 presidential front runner William Ruto, the lawmaker said a police officer is only charged with handling a firearm and thus it doesn’t need technical know-how.

“Provided they got two arms and legs, let them join the police service. A police service job only entails handling firearms, which doesn’t need training. Let those who have passed their examinations go to universities as those who failed and dropped out join the police service,” the senator said.

National Police Service Spokesperson Bruno Shioso had dropped a hint of locking out graduates from entering the service saying the move aims at resolving an impasse of graduates who end up seeking higher salaries while still serving in the lower ranks.

Currently, for one to join the NPS in Kenya, the candidate must possess a minimum mean grade of D+. (D Plus) and above in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

He or she must also have scored a minimum of D+ (D Plus) and above in either English or Kiswahili languages.

Furthermore, those seeking to serve in the NPS find it hard to land their dream job since those tasked with the selection of recruits solicit huge chunks of money if they want to be taken.

In March 2022, the NPS embarked on an exercise to recruit about 5,000 constables across the country to join the service in the build-up to the August 9, General Election.
