Kalonzo, Gideon plan to join Raila Odinga ahead of August election

by Enock Ndayala

Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party and the oldest political party KANU have convened meetings of their top organs to discuss plans to join the yet-to-be former Azimio la Umoja coalition led by ODM leader Raila Odinga ahead of the August 9, elections.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior on Thursday, February 3, revealed that Kalonzo Musyoka and Gideon Moi have scheduled their National Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, February 9, to consult with other party members before making their coalition with Raila formal.

Mutula, a close ally of Kalonzo Musyoka further revealed that negotiations have been ongoing between OKA and Raila’s Azimio la Umoja.

“The NEC meetings are supposed to bring members up to speed (with their negotiations) and to make sure they don’t take any step before members are consulted,” Kilonzo who is Wipers national vice chairman told the Star.

Mutula’s remarks were backed by John Osogo, a KANU NEC member who revealed that the meetings will discuss the progress of the negotiations among other things.

The meetings come amidst speculations that the One Kenya Alliance co-principals have agreed to team with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s handshake partner to form a formidable lineup that will give Deputy President William Ruto a run for his money.

Their decision to work with the former prime minister comes barely days after the duo held a closed-door meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta at the statehouse Nairobi where the deal was brokered.

This comes less than two weeks after ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford Kenya partner Moses Wetang’ula announced that they will be working with Deputy President William Ruto.

If OKA and Raila’s Azimio la Umoja ratify the deal, then the country 2022 presidential duel will be a two-horse race pitying United Democratic Alliance and Azimio la Umoja.
