The Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has dropped the clearest hint that he would be a running mate to the ODM leader Raila Odinga for the third time in the coming August General Elections.
While responding to questions from journalists at the party headquarters on Tuesday, April 5, the Wiper leader said there was no need of discussing the obvious.
“Let us not talk about the obvious. We don’t discuss the obvious,” Kalonzo said.
On the other hand, the former vice-president was confident that Raila, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition’s presidential candidate will emerge victorious in the August polls.
Speaking on the same matter last month, Kalonzo had hinted that he would only relinquish his push for a running mate slot if the Kamba community is given a substantial portion of the government of Azimio government.
“Talks on power-sharing are still underway. We want to ensure the Kamba community gets a fair deal,” Kalonzo had said.
After Kalonzo joined President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ODM leader to form a grand coalition in the run-up to the August elections, political arithmetic especially on sharing slots drastically changed.
There was a general perception that Raila will name his number two from the vote-rich region of Mt Kenya bearing in mind that the region will not be having a presidential candidate in the 2022 elections.
Currently, the Kenya Kwanza allied leaders in Mt Kenya are using Kalonzo’s demand for a running mate slot in de-campaigning the ODM leader in the pretext that the region will be sidelined in the Azimio government.
Days before the Wiper leader joined Raila on a campaign trail of West Pokot and Turkana counties there were murmurs in the political cycle that Kalonzo had refused to campaign for Raila until he is named the running mate.
