KANU boss Gideon Moi makes about-turn, to defend Senate seat

by Enock Ndayala

KANU chairman Gideon Moi will be defending his Baringo Senatorial seat in this year’s General Election scheduled for  August 9 General Election.

According to party Secretary-General Nick Salat, the independence party submitted Gideon Moi’s name to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to seek a third term in the Senate.

“Yes, the chairman’s name was submitted to the IEBC by the party to go for the Senate seat in the August General Election. The party’s election board forwarded the name but I do not know if it was his will or not, but his name was submitted,” Salat told the Daily Nation on Wednesday, May 18.

The decision is a departure from the party’s earlier stance that county politics was too junior for the leader who had initially launched his own presidential bid.

In March 2022, the former One Kenya Alliance (OKA) principal close allies of Gideon Moi revealed that the Kanu boss will concentrate his energies on national politics.

“First l want to make it clear that Gideon Moi will not seek re-election in the August 9 polls because he is focused on national politics,

“Chairman is now playing in the English Premier League, he cannot again go back to playing in local leagues. He is now focused on national politics,” KANU inner circles revealed to the press.

KANU Secretary Political Affairs Fredrick Okang’o said that the decision to run for whichever post is in Moi’s hands is yet to confirm.

The Kanu boss’s entry into the race opens a new supremacy battle between Deputy President William Ruto and Gideon Moi.

Gideon is expected to battle it out with Baringo North MP William Cheptumo of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a party heavily associated with William Ruto.
