Kenya election: List of women elected in the August General Election

by Enock Ndayala

The Just concluded General Election held on Tuesday, August 9, has handed the biggest victories to Kenyan women.

Unlike in 2017 when only three women were elective to head counties, the ongoing vote tallying exercise hints that the number of women leaders headed for the county’s top seats could be higher.

Already, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has declared two women as the governors-elect.

Kivumbi.co.ke has compiled a list of women leaders who have won the gubernatorial seats in their respective counties.

  1. Susan Kihika

Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika was on Friday, August 12, declared the third governor of Nakuru County.

  • Wavinya Ndeti

Although the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is yet to officially declare the Machakos gubernatorial results, there are clear indications that the former CAS is headed for victory.

Wavinya, took to her social media to congratulate voters for trusting in female leadership, especially at the county’s top level.

“Thank you for opening up your minds and hearts and for seeing the possibility of what we can do together for our children and the future of our great county a chance to serve as your second governor,” she said.

She beats former State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita of the Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) party.

Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru is set to retain her gubernatorial seat on a UDA ticket.
