Kenya Kwanza team avoid Luo Nyanza in the Western Kenya tour

by Amos Khaemba

Deputy President William Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza brigade have avoided Luo Nyanza during their ‘earthquake’ rallies ahead of the August 9, General Election.

Kenya Kwanza has visited most regions save for Luo Nyanza in their cross-country trips observed as attempts to enhance the yet-to-be-registered coalition’s visibility.

In Nyanza, DP Ruto and his team have paid visits to Kisii and Nyamira counties but have not been to Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori.

According to the latest data from Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the Nyanza region has 3,081,981 registered voters.

The counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, and Migori have 518056, 616871, 537108, and 454954 registered voters respectively.

The two counties that Kenya Kwanza has visited in the former Nyanza province have a combined voting base of 954,992 registered voters with Kisii county having 638,603 while Nyamira County has 316,389 listed voters.

On the contrary, DP Ruto and his new political friends comprising of Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula have visited Luhya land more than five times since that ‘earthquake’ announcement,

Ruto’s arch political rival, Raila, hails from Siaya and is viewed as the Luo community’s political kingpin which could have informed the lack of interest from Kenya Kwanza to the region.

The Luo Nyanza region has also shown some form of hostility to DP Ruto during his past trips, which could be the reason behind their decision not to campaign vigorously.

Deputy President William Ruto’s last political tour of Luo Nyanza counties was characterized by violence when a section of youths attempted to disrupt his rally in Kisumu.

The second in command has on some occasions has accused the ODM leader of inciting his followers against other political opponents.

“Kisumu belongs to everyone. In this country, we should not be stoned and the gentleman (Raila Odinga) is just quiet,

“Let him talk to us about Kibra and Kondele and the violence that he (Raila Odinga) organizes. We want to get rid of political intolerance in this country,” said Ruto in reference to violence witnessed in Kisumu during his rally.
