Kericho governor in trouble over embezzlement of cash meant for Londiani victims

A section of Members of the County Assembly is contemplating tabling a motion of impeachment against Kericho Governor Eric Mutai.

This was after 15 ad-hoc committee members led by the Leader of Majority, Philip Rono tasked with the probe of KSh 14.5 million raised for Londiani accident victims revealed that the cash was misappropriated.

Further, Kericho County Assembly approved an ad hoc committee report that recommended the removal of senior county government officials involved in the misappropriation of funds intended for Londiani accident victims.

The implicated officials for removal include County Secretary Wesley Bor, Health County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Brenda Bii, Leonard Ngetich (Finance and Economic Planning), and Alphonse Rotich (Chief Officer, Executive Office of the Governor).

Rono, who is also the chair of the ad hoc committee argued that the governor might have conspired with the si senior county officials to embezzle the funds meant for the dead.

This he said was due to the fact that the county boss is yet to take any stern actions against the six officials despite the fact that the County Assembly had approved the report recommending their removal.

As such, Rono stated that they will table a motion of impeachment immediately after they get back from recess.

“We are going for a short recess but when we are back, we will immediately for a select committee to look into this report and after that, we will bring a motion into the house of impeachment,” Rono said.

The Londiani accident, which took place at the Londiani junction market in July, claimed 52 lives, prompting a fundraiser led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that saw KSh 14.5 million being raised by wellwishers.

However, out of the KSh 14.5 million raised on July 4, 2023, at Londiani stadium, only KSh 5.7 million reached the victims’ families. Each of the 53 families who lost their loved ones in the accident received KSh 90,000, while the injured were given KSh 60,000.
