Kericho senator claims Meru governor forced to support Raila or face corruption case

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot said the move by Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi to support former prime minister Raila Odinga was not voluntary.

This comes barely hours after Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi on Tuesday, March 8, officially announced that his Devolution Empowerment Party had joined the Azimio la Umoja movement.

However, in a statement posted on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday, March 8, Cheruiyot argued that the governor was compelled to support Raila’s presidential bid.

Cheruiyot, an ardent supporter of Deputy President William Ruto further argued that the Meru governor would face severe corruption charges if he failed to join Azimio la Umoja coalition being fronted by the former prime minister and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He castigated Kiraitu’s move to unwillingly work with Raila saying it is a sure ticket to send him into early retirement because he will eventually lose the Meru gubernatorial seat in the forthcoming General Election.

“Kiraitu Muringi will get sleep for the first time today in many months. The infamous file will now stagger back to EACC from the DPP’s desk. The poor good old man had to choose between handcuffs and surrender of the governor’s seat. In the end, he chose retirement,” he said.

In July 2021, reports emerged on social media claiming Meru governor, his wife, and three children were facing arrest over alleged graft.

According to a notice allegedly from the EACC, Kiraitu’s wife and three children were set to be arrested and arraigned in court over KSh 2 billion Meru county corruption scandal.

The notice further revealed that the EACC had conducted investigations and had allegedly found the four culpable of embezzling the funds by paying companies connected to officials from the Meru county government to a tune of KSh 2 billion shillings in unclear deals.
