Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has questioned President Uhuru Kenyatta motive in pushing for changes in elections laws yet he is retiring after serving two terms.

In a statement posted on his Twitter on Thursday, February 3, the Jubilee legislator wondered why the first in command is seeking to amend election laws with just 186 days to the August 9, General Election.

“Why would a retiring President ( Uhuru Kenyatta) seek to change election laws a few months to the General Election?” the legislator posed.

Cheruiyot, who is allied to Deputy President William Ruto read malice in the Elections (Amendment) Bill 2021 saying it will interfere with the whole election process.

“Why would he lead cabinet to draft a law directing IEBC on how to manage our elections? Why the panic? With such levels of interference, will it end well?” he said.

His comments come at a time when Members of Parliament allied to President Uhuru and Raila Odinga are pushing for the adoption of the Election Bill 2021.

The Bill if adopted will deny Kenyans access to election results until the winner is announced as it seeks to ban live streaming of the presidential results ahead of the August 2022 General Election.

It further recommends that a Presiding Officer shall electronically transmit the image of the results in the prescribed form to the national tallying centre.

This according to a bill by the Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Amos Kimunya seeks at safeguarding the transmission of the presidential results from the polling stations to the national tallying centre.
