IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has said he will write to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Nordin Haji to prosecute Kiambu governor James Nyoro for allegedly causing chaos in Juja by-election.
Speaking after visiting Juja constituency on Wednesday, May 19, morning, the electoral agency boss said Nyoro and his team must face the law.
“We are going to write to the Director of Public Prosecution Nordin Haji to ensure that those who caused chaos are prosecuted accordingly,” Chebukati said.
This is after the recently sworn in governor on Tuesday, May 18 night stormed the Juja constituency tallying center and disrupted the tallying process.
“At around 10:20pm tonight there was disruption of the tallying process at Mang’u high school tallying center in Juja constituency by a group of individuals led by the Kiambu County governor James Nyoro,” IEBC said in a statement.
Chebukati’s commission was forced to suspend the tallying process for up to six hours saying the acts of hooliganism by Nyoro made the process impossible to proceed.
“In order to ensure the safety of our staff, the election material and to preserve the integrity of the election process, the Commission hereby suspends the tallying process and announcement of results until is fully restored,” Chebukati said.
In a video that went viral, Nyoro, who took over Kiambu government after his boss, Ferdinand Waititu was impeached was heard claiming unknown individuals were out to rig the highly contested election in favor of PEP candidate Geoffrey Koimburi.
“We don’t give a damn. And we don’t care,” Nyoro was heard saying.
Jubilee candidate Susan Njeri protested the results that declared Geoffrey Koimburu as the Juja Member of Parliament elect.
Njeri who stormed out of the tallying center claimed that the entire process was rigged adding that her complaints to the electoral agency fell on deaf ears.
