Last week, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of interfering with the running of Kenyatta University.

The Ford Kenya party leader said the Head of State was acting as though Kenyatta University is part of his family property because it bears the name of President Uhuru’s father.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen also added to the conversation saying government institutions should not be named after individuals.

Last week, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of interfering with the running of Kenyatta University.

Outspoken Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has now proposed that the institution be renamed Githurai University an apparent indirect attack at President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking on Saturday, July 16, during a Kenya Kwanza Alliance campaign in Githuai, Nyoro, an alumnus of the institute suggested that the only way to safeguard the institution’s interest was by changing its name.

“Sisi kama watu tumesomea huko, tunaeza ondoa hiyo Kenyatta University, hata iitwe Githurai University (As Kenyatta Alumnus, we can change the name from Kenyatta University to Githurai University),” the legislator said.

Nyoro’s remarks come days after Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Paul Wainaina was controversially ousted for refusing to surrender part of Kenyatta University’s land to the government for a World Health Organization (WHO) project.

Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula accused the Head of State of influencing Wainaina’s dismal.

Speaking during a Kenya kwanza Alliance rally in Kiambu County on Friday, July 15, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance co-principal promised that their government that would be formed after the August 9, General Election will reinstate Wainaina as the Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor.

“… And I want to assure the management of Kenyatta University that after 9 of August, former vice chancellor Wainaina who has been dismissed by President Uhuru will be reinstated,” he said.
