William Ruto allies hit out at Uhuru Kenyatta for neglecting Rift Valley region

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has taken a swipe at President Uhuru Kenyatta over his planned visit to the Rift Valley region.

According to Murkomen the Head of State has been evading the region since his March 2018 handshake with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

“Rift Valley region under the leadership of (William) Ruto has voted for Uhuru Kenyatta 4 times (2002, 2013, 2017 plus repeat presidential elections). For 4 years he has been missing in action in the region. His visit is long overdue.

“We have many questions touching on projects & governance. We shall be there under the leadership of William Samoei Ruto who led us to him (President Uhuru). I can not wait,” Murkomen wrote on his Twitter page.

Uhuru’s visit to the region has been termed by Ruto allies as a strategy to woo them back as his (the president’s) popularity in Rift Valley has diminished.

They have accused Uhuru of focusing on the pro-handshake regions, neglecting the Rift Valley and Central, which gave him the majority of the votes in the 2017 and 2013 General Elections.

Speaking separately to the Star Newspaper, Soy MP Caleb Kositany said President Uhuru had put several projects in the two regions on hold after his dalliance with Raila Odinga.

“When you visit various counties in Rift Valley and Mt Kenya, you will see projects that have stalled midway. He (Uhuru) does not care anymore for the regions that voted for him,

“He has kept off visiting Rift Valley and he only goes to Mt Kenya to read the riot act. But we will exercise patience for the 14 months that are remaining,” Kossitany said.

President Uhuru’s visit to the region comes after Rift Valley leaders accused him of channeling projects to Nyanza since his handshake with Raila Odinga.

Raila Odinga came out to defend Uhuru against the allegations, accusing the Tanga Tanga brigade of causing unnecessary political divisions.

“Odinga finds such talk retrogressive, divisive, dishonest and against the spirit of building one prosperous nation out of its diverse nationalities and regions,” read part of a statement from his spokesperson Dennis Onyango.
