Kiraitu made the announcement on Tuesday, March 8, further declaring his support for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga.

The governor made the announcement in a meeting attended by the former Prime Minister, Junet Mohamed (Suna East MP), and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya among others.

The Azimio la Umoja presidential hopeful Raila Odinga thanked the governor for inviting him and joining the movement.

The move by the county boss to join Azimio la Umoja coalition comes barely days after he appeared to attack presidential front runners William Ruto and Raila Odinga.

Immediately after the Sagana meeting on February 23, Kiraitu who has announced plans to seek re-election as the Meru governor in the forthcoming elections hit out at Raila’s campaign agenda that seeks to give the vulnerable people in Kenya a KSh 6,000 monthly stipend.

“There are some who are going around claiming that if they ascend to power, they will give each family KSh 6, 000,” he said.

Kiraitu is expected to battle it out with Meru senator Mithika Linturi for the gubernatorial seat in the August 9, General Election.
