Kirinyaga governor in bitter fight with EACC boss ‘stop peddling village gossip’

by Amos Khaemba

The debate around some candidates falling short of the integrity test as per Chapter Six of the Constitution in the forthcoming General Election seems to be far from over.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission recently released a list of 241 candidates whom it wants to be blocked from contesting in the forthcoming General Election as they are considered to have failed the integrity test as stipulated by the constitution.

Prominent politicians among them Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru featured in the list over allegations ranging from corruption to abuse of office.

Commenting on the list, the vocal governor accused the EACC of being used by the deep state to manage electoral processes.

EACC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Twalib Mbarak hit back at Waiguru teaming her utterances as “shameful” arguing that Kenyans know Waiguru’s social standing on integrity issues.

“Governor Anne Waiguru’s comments are extremely shameful, as Kenyans know her well including her social standing on integrity,” the EACC boss said.

However, Friday, June 3, Waiguru a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto, termed the response by the EACC boss as reckless.

“Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Your response to my complaint came as a shock for its irresponsible and pedestrian content,” Waiguru said on Facebook.

“You hold a constitutional Chapter 15 office which demands the highest level of impartiality and professionalism. Your reckless response on such a serious matter proves your unworthiness to hold such a serious office.” She added.

The UDA gubernatorial candidate challenged the EACC to provide evidence over allegations levied against her instead of engaging in a political prosecution.

“You are supposed to be an impartial investigator, not a peddler of “everyone knows” village shopping center narratives. Produce evidence if you have it, not the info that is politically instigated by your Harambee house masters.” Waiguru said.

Earlier on the Kirinyaga governor had alleged that were it not for the constitutional safeguards that separate investigations, prosecution, and adjudication, EACC would have hanged her.
