Former Othaya MP Mary Wambui on Tuesday, April 26, condoled with the family of late President Mwai Kibaki.
Wambui who was being touted as President Kibaki’s other wife was pictured condoling with late President Mwai Kibaki’s son Jimmy Kibaki.
Mary Wambui had alleged that she and Kibaki got married in 1972 insisting that she was the then President Mwai Kibaki’s second wife.
She alleged that the two had performed a traditional wedding where Kibaki met Wambui’s parents and the bride price was paid.
Their marriage flourished and moved on well until 2002 when Mwai Kibaki became the President of Kenya.
“I met Kibaki a long time ago in Nanyuki, through his cousin who lived there,
“Also, our paths crossed because I was a teacher and I would accompany the children to perform for the bigwigs during functions. Kibaki was a government minister then,” she said.
In 2004, the media reported that Kibaki has a second spouse allegedly married under customary law Mary, and a daughter, Winnie Wangui Mwai.
But a few days later, Kibaki, in the company of a visibly irritated Lucy Kibaki, was forced to call a press briefing and declared that he only had one wife adding that anything else people were hearing was propaganda.
“You know and I know and everybody else knows that I have only one dear wife, Lucy here, but the media keeps repeating about my having another wife or wives,” Kibaki declared.
Kibaki who died on Friday, April 22, is expected to be laid to rest on Saturday, April 30, at his Othaya home in Nyeri County.
Kibaki has left behind four children Judy Wanjiku, Jimmy Kibaki, David Kagai, and Tony, Githinji.
