Laughter as Aisha Jumwa terms President Ruto deputy president

by Enock Ndayala

On Friday, November 18, Kenya’s President William Ruto toured counties of the coastal region.

While in Kwale County, the Head of State who was accompanied by a section of coastal leaders including former Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa officially commissioned the Devki Steel Mills.

In her speech, the newly sworn-in Cabinet Secretaries for Public Service, Gender, and Affirmative Action Aisha Jumwa thanked the President for appointing her into the Cabinet.

In what appeared like a slip of the tongue, the former Malindi MP mistakenly referred to President William Ruto as ‘Naibu wa rais’ (deputy president).

After realizing her mistakes, the CS immediately apologized and said she was used to Ruto being the deputy president, suggesting her minor gaffe should be overlooked.

“Mimi nataka nichukue nafasi hii kwanza kabisa nimshukuru Naibu wa … Samahani, Kumradhi, tumeishi naye kama naibu wa rais sana. Nichukue nafasi hii nimshukuru rais wa jamhuri yetu ya Kenya kwa kunichagua mimi kuwa wazirikatika baraza la mawaziri,” Aisha Jumwa said.

Loosely translated to “I want to take this opportunity first to thank the Deputy President… I’m sorry; we have lived with him as the deputy president a lot. Let me take this opportunity to thank the president of our republic of Kenya for electing me to be a minister in the cabinet.”

While making her speech, Jumwa mistakenly referred to Ruto as ‘deputy president’ before realizing the blunder a few moments later.

During the event, billionaire Narendra Naval gifted President William Ruto a mini wheelbarrow in appreciation for his hustler initiative.

“There is a big gift that I will give you, you will love it. I am sure you will keep it on your table. I am very happy to say that people who couldn’t speak, have a chance to talk because of you,” he said.
