Lawyer Ahmednasir refuses to represent President-elect William Ruto in Supreme Court

by Enock Ndayala
Renowned city lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has poked holes in President William Ruto’s State of the Nation address delivered on Thursday, November 9.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is expected to file a case at the Supreme Court to challenge the results of the presidential election which saw Ruto declared the winner.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party is leaving nothing to change and has assembled a team of over 30 lawyers and experts to argue their case.

Most of the lawyers on both sides were involved in the 2017 presidential election petition and only a few new faces will be making their first-time appearance.

Among those representing Raila include Philip Murgor, Siaya governor-elect James Orengo, Rarieda MP-elect Otiende Amollo, incoming Kisumu senator Tom Ojienda, Paul Mwangi, and Pheroze Nowrejee among others.

The Kenya Kwanza Alliance is reported to have hired William Ruto’s Presidential chief agent Kithure Kindiki, Kioko Kilukumi, Katwa Kigen, Nelson Havi, and Muthomi Thiankolu to defend William Ruto’s win.

Notably, missing from Ruto’s list of lawyers was lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi who defended the controversial Jubilee win in the 2017 presidential petition.

In a statement on Sunday, August 21, the Senior Counsel, an ardent supporter of President-elect William Ruto said he will not defend the former deputy president in the Supreme Court.

He said in the Supreme Court battle, the war will be between President-elect William Ruto and retiring President Uhuru Kenyatta and not presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

As such, Ahmednasir said he was willing to defend Ruto’s win due to conflicting interests.

“I want but I can’t act for President-Elect Ruto in the Supreme Court. I’m conflicted. In 2017 I acted for outgoing President Uhuru against Raila Odinga. Now that Uhuru’s project (Hon Raila) is challenging Ruto’s victory obviously Uhuru will object and raise clients-Advocate privilege,” he said in a Tweet.
