Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru: One Kenya Alliance is overrated

by Enock Ndayala

Constitutional lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has said that the One Kenya Alliance is being given too much attention yet has no significant political influence ahead of the August 2022 General Election.

Speaking in an interview with TV 47 on Monday, January 17, the Advocate of the High Court argued that the coalition cannot tilt the balance to the extent of the county having to hold presidential election re-run.

“I do not think OKA individuals can tilt the balance to the extent of runoff. We are giving a lot of credit and limelight to something that we should not,” Ndegwa Njiru said.

Lawyer Ngegwa’s remarks come at a time when OKA principals Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Gideon Moi (Kanu), and Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya) have failed to name a presidential flag bearer even as the clock ticks towards the August 9, elections.

On Friday, January 14, Kalonzo, Moi, and Wetang’ula retreated in Elementaita, Nakuru county where they had promised to announce who will face off with ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto in the August 2022 presidential election.

However, the meeting ended in without the promised outcome after the trio failed to reach a deal in a meeting that ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi skipped.

Speaking to journalists after the retreat, Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula said the coalition will name its presidential candidate before the end of january 2022.

Wetang’ula who is also the Bungoma Senator remained firm that they are a team and called on OKA supporters to be patient stating that the agenda of unveiling the coalition’s flag bearer and running mate is an exclusive duty of the coalition.

“The agenda of unveiling a flagbearer and a running mate is an exclusive duty and reserve of OKA, we want to encourage the media to be patient…we are likely to unveil our candidate at the end of January. We still have time,” said Ford Kenya Party leader Moses Wetangula.
