List of 30 new faces who won senate seats

by Enock Ndayala

The Senate is one of the most important components in keeping the county governments in check.

Apart from protecting devolution, senators are tasked with the oversight role to ensure that the county governments are run in accordance with the laws establishing them.

Women, former governors, youths, and former senators are among the 47 senators who were elected in the just-concluded 2022 General Election.

President-elect William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party had the majority in the senate with 22 elected senators followed closely by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ODM with 13 elected leaders.

Just like in the previous senate, three women Tabitha Karanja (Nakuru), Agnes Kavindu (Machakos), and Fatuma Dullo were also elected into the senate.

Data by Mzalendo, an entity that keeps track of MP’s performance, shows that only 17 senators who served in the previous senate retained their seats.

Out of the 17, only five of them including Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula, Moses Kajwang (Homa Bay), Stewart Mazdayo (Kilifi), Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet), and Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho) will be serving their third consecutive term.

Kivumbi.co.ke has compiled a list of 30 new faces that were elected senators in the August 9, General Election.

Among the 30 senators who were newly elected include legislators who served in the first senate but lost in the 2017 General Election but have since made a come back.
