At least 46 Kenyans have been cleared to contest in this year’s presidential elections as independent candidates, Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu has said.
As of Tuesday, May 3, Nderitu announced that a total of 46 contenders who had applied to succeed outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta had been cleared to join the race as independent candidates.
The 46 aspirants will have to be cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), through Chairman Wafula Chebukati who is the returning officer for the presidential election.
After which, they will brace for a tough battle from aspirants who will be vying on various party tickets including William Ruto of UDA and former prime minister Raila Odinga who is the defacto Azimio la Umoja –One Kenya Coalition party presidential flag bearer.
Apart from Raila and Ruto other prominent party nominees include Jimi Wanjigi of the Safina Party, Mwangi Wa Iria of the Usawa Party, and Roots presidential candidate Prof George Wajackoyah.
The presidential aspirants cleared to contest include perennial contestant Nazlin Omar, Nixon Kukubo, and Muthiora Kariara, who vied in 2017 as a running-mate, gospel artiste Reuben Kigame and former Presbyterian Church of East Africa Moderator David Githii.
