At least four State House hopefuls are expected to face off in today’s presidential debate at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

Raila Odinga of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, Deputy President William Ruto of UDA, George Wajackoyah of the Roots Party, and Agano Party’s David Mwaure are expected to sell their agenda to Kenyans as the 2022 General Election enters the homestretch.

Media Owners Association, the Media Council of Kenya, and the Editors’ Guild, who are part of the organizers of the event, have split the debate into two.

The first debate involves candidates with less than five percent popularity in the recent opinion polls which will see George Wajackoyah face off with David Mwaure from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

Round two will see presidential front runners William Ruto and Raila Odinga who have polled at least five percent in the latest opinion polls and their exchange will air from 8 pm to 10 pm.

Raila through his presidential campaign spokesman Makau Mutua in a statement on Sunday, July 24, threatened to skip the debate claiming that William Ruto ‘lacks basic decency.’

Wajackoyah on the other hand has insisted that he will not attend the debate unless it’s held at once with all the four presidential candidates present.

But the organizers of the event insisted that the debate will go on as originally planned despite concerns raised by the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party and the Roots party of Kenya.

In a statement, the head of the presidential debate secretariat Clifford Machoka said at least 23 envoys including representatives from the United State and the United Nations will attend the debate.

Machoka without giving names said envoys from Germany, Ukraine, Switzerland, Algeria, Argentina, and Australia have also confirmed their attendance.

Others are from Congo, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Finland, Jordan, Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Sweden.
