Law Society of Kenya (LSK) elections: Nelson Havi’s preferred candidate loses

by Amos Khaemba

Outgoing Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi, suffered a blow after his preferred successor was trounced by Eric Theuri in the LSK elections.

Prior to the elections, Havi had cautioned lawyers against electing Theuri, accusing him of financial impropriety.

“Theuri has been implicated for the pilfering of the society’ funds collected from the Milimani law court car park….it can now, therefore, be understood why Theuri was determined to protect and retain Wambua (LSK CEO) in office and..

“Prevent the conduct of forensic audit which could have exposed him for the loss of monies of the society,” Havi said in a statement on February 19, calling for the rejection of Theuri as LSK president.

The former LSK president was rooting for Carolyne Kamende to succeed him as the LSK boss.

To the disappointment of Havi, Theuri garnered 1811 against his closest rival Carolyne Kamende who had 1085. Others who sought to replace Havi were Bernhard Ng’etich (452) Mathew Nyabena (745) and Omwanza Ombati (920).

After the elections, Havi took to Twitter to indirectly express his dissatisfaction with the outcome of the election saying “ The people are entitled to their collective wisdom or mistake. That is the beauty and flow of democracy,”

For the position of vice president, Faith Odhiambo won with 1734 votes, Ajwang Debra came second with 1328 votes followed closely by Boniface Akusala with 1333 while David Nyamwya came fourth with 662 votes.

For the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) female representative, the Lawyers elected Jacquiline Ingutiah as their representative.

The polls which recorded a low turnout were conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) across 25 designated LSK polling stations countrywide.
