Maendeleo ya Wanawake defends Uhuru against attacks from former chief justices

by Nderi Caren

The Maendeleo ya Wanawake lobby group has faulted Former Chief Justice David Maraga and Willy Mutunga for their recent outburst at President Uhuru over perceived disobedience of the constitution..

In a press statement seen by Kivumbi.co.ke, the group asked the two to let the new Chief Justice Martha Koome do her work.

They told Maraga and Mutunga they had their glory days and should stop overshadowing Koome while addressing president Uhuru.

The women lobby group described Martha Koome’s swearing-in ceremony as a historical moment that Maraga and Mutunga have since ruined by addressing Uhuru directly through the media.

“Both Willy Mutunga and David Maraga have opted to totally bypass Martha Koome in their bid to impose their own legal philosophy and interpretation of the constitution on her, in effect of implying that the current Chief Justice is incapable of carrying out her duties to their lofty standards of supposed perfection,” read the statement.

According to the group, Maraga and Mutunga acted as though Martha Koome is incapable of understanding law concepts without their detailed explanation.

“We strongly condemn the chauvinism displayed by Mutunga and Maraga. As supposed defenders of justice, they should know better. Their treatment of their successor Martha Koome recks of casual misogyny and disrespect, not just of her, but all women in this country,” the statement went on.

The address comes at a time when Uhuru has received sharp criticism from the former chief justices over failure to appoint 6 among the 40 judges presented to him by the Judiciary Service Commission.

In separate addresses, both accused Uhuru of having little to no respect for the constitution, recommending his resignation of impeachment by parliament.

Willy Mutunga wrote a letter to Uhuru, asking him to appoint the 6 judges for the sake of the constitution.

On the other hand, Maraga spoke about his disappointment with Uhuru in a live interview on KTN News.

“I will remember him as a president who has no regard for the law,” he said.
