Makau Mutua: Raila doesn’t need Kalonzo to win presidential elections

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused his supporters of not turning out in large numbers during the anti-government protests called by the opposition.

Political analyst Makau Mutua has exuded confidence that ODM leader Raila Odinga will win the presidential elections whether the Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka joins them or not.

The recently appointed Raila Odinga’s Presidential Campaign Secretariat and spokesperson insisted that the August 9 presidential election is between Deputy President William Ruto and opposition chief Raila Odinga.

Mutua who said he was speaking on behalf of the former prime minister said that it is high time Kalonzo Musyoka joins the Azimio la Umoja team or risks being left out of the government that would be formed.

“We are going to win the elections on August 9 whether Kalonzo joins us or not,” Mutua said during his latest interview with Citizen TV.

Mutua was responding to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka over his claims that the ODM boss is bound to support his presidential bid following a deal they had in 2017.

He dismissed the existence of the deal noting that should the deal exist as claimed by Kalonzo, then it would have died after the collapse of the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition which occurred in 2020.

He said while they would appreciate his support, the United States-based Kenyan lawyer urged the One Kenya Alliance principal to shelve his presidential ambitions and strike a fresh deal with Raila who is currently the Azimio la Umoja’s preferred presidential candidate.

“The deal is of no use in the current political dispensation for us to litigate discussion that took place in 2017,

“What both Kalonzo and Raila need to do is to come to the table and negotiate in the context of Azimio and for Kalonzo to find a place for himself within the broad umbrella that we are building,” Mutua said.
