Makau Mutua: Ruto will abolish presidential term limits if elected in August 2022

by Enock Ndayala

United States-based Kenyan lawyer and activist Makau Mutua has sensationally claimed that Deputy President William Ruto could abolish presidential term limits if elected the next president.

Mutua an ardent supporter of ODM leader Raila Odinga opined that it will be so hard for the 55-year-old to only rule for 10 years.

In a statement posted on his social media pages, the Kenya Human Rights Commission chairperson further claimed that the deputy president would create a deeply corrupt one-man dictatorship.

United States-based Kenyan lawyer and activist Makau Mutua has sensationally claimed that Deputy President William Ruto could abolish presidential term limits if elected the next president.

While warning Kenyans against William Ruto’s presidency, Mutua said the deputy president who has been rooting for the formation of a national party would not only detain and exile perceived critics but would also make Kenya a one-party state.

“I fear that if elected President DP William Ruto will abolish term limits, create a deeply corrupt one-man dictatorship and a one-party ethnostate, kill the press, end judicial independence, detain and exile real/perceived critics, and subject dissenters to unspeakable acts,” he said in a Tweet.

Mutua’s remarks come on the backdrop of a revelation made by ODM leader Raila Odinga that he will not stay in power for too long should he succeed retiring President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Raila who was speaking on Wednesday, December 29, at Matuga Girls’ High School in Kwale County during his Azimio La Umoja popularization campaign said he will only serve one term as the president if elected.

While allaying fears that he is looking for political fame and power to benefit himself, the former Prime Minister said he would lead the country for the third and final revolution by uprooting the corrupted system of governance and establishing a strong foundation for socioeconomic and political growth.

“I don’t dream of staying in power forever but I want to live good leadership for the future generation to come,” Raila Odinga said.
