Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has hinted at vying for the senate seat in the August 9, General Election after dropping presidential bid.

In an exclusive interview with Musyi FM on Monday, January 18, Kibwana who is serving his second and last constitutional term said he will officially make a decision after conducting the electorates.

“We will ask the people who they want. I would not want to be a political conman but I always listen and follow the voice of the people,” Kibwana said.

Makueni seat is currently being held by Mutula Kilonzo junior who has expressed interests in the gubernatorial seat.

The law professor becomes the third second-term County Governor to seek a senatorial seat after Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos.

Kibwana is expected to battle it out with his student-turned-political-nemesis Dan Maanzo who is also the Makueni Member of Parliament.

This comes barely days after the Makueni governor withdrew from the Presidential race in the upcoming General Election.

While abandoning his presidential bid, Kibwana said he will support the ODM leader Raila Odinga’s State House bid.

“I consulted my people in Makueni on Thursday, January and my people gave me a go-ahead to support Azimio through Muungano party and they told me that I have still age on my side and at some future point I will resume my presidential candidature,” he said.

He exuded confidence that the former Prime Minister will clinch the presidential seat stating that he was the best bet to only protect devolution but also champion development at the grass-root level.

“He (Raila Odinga) has always been pro-devolution and as governors, we are sure he will strengthen devolved units. The governors feel that devolution can only be enhanced by someone who has been talking about it from the word go,” Kibwana said at the Enashipai Resort in Naivasha during an Azimio la Umoja consultative meeting.
