The NARCK-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has advised Kenyans to put focus on electing better governors rather than concentrating on the presidency.

Speaking in Machakos on Friday, April 1, during the Maendeleo ya Wanawake 70th Anniversary celebration, Karua said a good president will not help if people elect a bad governor.

“Even if you elect a president of your choice, you must know that if you do not elect governors and MCAs who understand work you stand to suffer,” Karua said.

“If you focus on the presidency only, and forget to focus on your county, you will suffer when your favorite president is seated at the State House.” She added.

She challenged the women to put emphasis on electing leaders at the county level, beginning with members of the County Assembly, Governors, MPs, and Senators.

Giving an example of Kirinyaga County, the NARCK-Kenya leader said that even though the county elected President Uhuru unanimously in 2017, health services remain wanting.

“For example in Kirinyaga, we all elected President Uhuru, but our health services are worse because he cannot do anything, his work is only to sign for resources to go to the counties as health services are devolved function,” Karua noted.

Karua who recently threw her weight behind Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga called on women to elect women leaders even if they vie on opposing political formations.

“In our unity in diversity, we should push for women to occupy top seats,” Karua said while advocating for the election of more women in the coming August General Election.

In the August elections, Karua will be making her second attempt in capturing the Kirinyaga County gubernatorial seat.
