ODM leader Raila Odinga last week declared peaceful mass protests against President William Ruto’s government which are expected to kick off on Monday, March 20.

The former Prime Minister said he will lead the protests himself and explained that the action will involve company boycotts, strikes, and sit-ins in government offices.

“Take note that on Monday, March 20, we have a date with destiny in Nairobi. We shall stage a massive procession in Nairobi for a legitimate and inclusive government,” Raila announced to supporters.

With just days to the day, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party presidential running mate Martha Karua now wants Monday, March 20, declared a public holiday.

Speaking in Siaya County on Tuesday, March 14, the Narc Kenya party leader said this will help all the Azimio supporters to take part in the planned mega rally.

Karua said some supporters were employed and that they cannot manage to go to protest and work at the same time.

“That will be our day. I want to ask Baba (Raila Odinga) to declare the day a public holiday. We cannot manage to go to protest and also go to work. It should be a public holiday so that we can finish this work,” Karua said.

Raila in a rejoinder ceded to Martha Karua call and declared Monday, March 20, a public holiday.

Raila who unsuccessfully vied for the president five times said they would allow their supporters who would normally go to work to join them in the rally.

“We do not want any kind of violence or bloodshed. It is going to be peaceful. We are only doing this because it is the only alternative that we have.

“In the name of Azimio one Kenya Alliance, We declare that Monday, March 20 will be a public holiday,” Raila stated.

However, it is worth noting that the veteran politician has no legal mandate to declare public holidays.
