Masinde Muliro University will on December 9, hold its 18th Graduation Ceremony at the university’s Main Campus in Kakamega.

The university in a paid advert in local dailies said it will award Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi with an honorary degree.

It said it will award the former vice president with an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in Peace and Sustainable Development.

The university said the conferment will be in recognition of Mudavadi’s immense accomplishments in peace and sustainable development and his achievements as a person and a public officer.

It further said that the award which is awarded without an examination was also in recognition of Musalia Mudavadi’s “exemplary service to humanity, extensive benevolence, and charitable work.”

“Mudavadi is a public servant, trailblazer, diplomat, and peacemaker who is now famously known as a safe pair of hands,” Masinde Muliro University said.

It is worth noting that the former ANC party leader was among the team that brokered a truce between ODM leader Raila Odinga and late President Mwai Kibaki during the 2007/08 post-election violence.

“The apogee of his peace-making effort was demonstrated when he was named as team leader of the ODM’s side in the Koffi Annan Mediation Team during the 2007/2008 post-election violence in Kenya,” the university said.

Kivumbi.co.ke understands that Mudavadi is not the first person from rich background to be awarded an honorary degree.

In July 2022, Kenyatta University nominated President Uhuru Kenyatta’s sister Kristina Wambui Pratt for the conferment of an honorary degree.

The institute said it awarded Wambui in recognition of her commitment and service to people living with disabilities.
