Mathira MP claims President Uhuru’s brother could be next deputy president

by Enock Ndayala

Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has sensationally claimed that President Uhuru’s brother Muhoho Kenyatta could be the next deputy president.

Speaking in Kajiado County on Tuesday, February 15, during a Kenya Kwanza Alliance rally led by Deputy President William Ruto to drum up support for their camp, Gachagua claimed that Uhuru is secretly grooming his brother to be ODM leader Raila Odinga’s running mate in the August 9, elections.

“Ata iko wengine wametuambia leo asubuhi ati wanataka huyu Rais wetu Uhuru Kenyatta vateuwe ndugu yake Muhoho Kenyatta akuwe naibu wa Raila Odinga (Some people have told us this morning that they want our President Uhuru Kenyatta to appoint his brother Muhoho Kenyatta as Raila Odinga’s deputy),” he said.

Gachagua who is being considered to be William Ruto’s running mate further took a swipe at President Uhuru Kenyatta for actively taking part in the succession politics.

He accused the head of state of shortchanging his deputy president in the race to state house adding that Uhuru wants the leadership of this country to revolve around the three royal families.

This comes barely days after Jubilee Deputy Secretary-General Joshua Kutuny said that President Uhuru Kenyatta will play a crucial role in choosing Raila’s running mate.

Kutuny said the move by the Jubilee party to give President Uhuru Kenyatta powers to negotiate with other political parties indirectly gives him powers to influence Raila’s choice of running mate in the August 9, presidential election.

“The president underscored the need for the full support for the Azimio coalition. He mentioned something like Jubilee will have a big say in producing Raila’s running mate. Those are part of negotiations going on, but it is too early,” Kutuny said.

It is highly expected that President Uhuru’s party will be unveiling its preferred choice for a running mate during its National Delegates Convention that will be held on February 25 and 26.

Narc Kenya Martha Karua, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, and Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui are among those leading the race to be Raila’s running mate.
