by Enock Ndayala

Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has said that he is not interested in being Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate ahead of the August 9, elections.

Speaking on Monday, February 14, during the second phase of consultative engagements in Nyeri County, Gachagua said that the deputy president has not approached him to be his running mate.

Gachagua, an ardent supporter of the deputy president said the biggest problem bedeviling the people of the vote-rich Mt Kenya region is not positions and power-sharing but the economic situation in the region.

The vocal Tanga Tanga legislator further stated that the region has produced the first in command yet it is suffering more than the other regions adding that the debate on who to be Ruto’s running mate will come at the right time.

“We are not discussing matters of positions. We are discussing matters of economic revival. We are in agreement that our problem is not positions because we have the presidency yet we are in trouble, we are impoverished, suffering hence we don’t think the positions will sort out our problems,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua’s remarks come barely two months after the deputy president indirectly endorsed the billionaire politician to be his number two in the upcoming elections.

Ruto who was speaking at a rally in Nyeri on Saturday, December 4, heaped praise at Gachagua in what apparently showed that he would pick as his possible running mate in the 2022 State House race.

“I want to ask you for one favour, allow Kanda ya Wira (Rigathi Gachagua) Gachagua to accompany me to other parts of the country so that we can be able to win this seat. Free him so that he can engage in national politics,” William Ruto pursued Nyeri residents.
