Meru governor wants Raila to pick Peter Munya as running mate

by Amos Khaemba

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has called on the ODM leader Raila Odinga to pick his bitter rival Peter Munya as his presidential running mate ahead of the August 9 General Election.

Speaking in Meru on Wednesday, March 2, Kiraitu lauded the performance of Munya as the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary under President Uhuru’s administration saying it has been exemplary.

“We thank our bother Peter Munya who was given the charge to fight locust in this country and he did an exemplary job that is why we are receiving today KSh 37 million from the emergency locust response project under the Ministry of Agriculture,” Kiraitu said.

The Meru governor said that Munya has all it takes to be the presidential running of the former prime minister under the Azimio la Umoja movement.

“We pray for Peter Munya to get a good position at the national level, we know the deputy president position has not been named, he is a strong fighter, he is a warrior,” Murunga said.

At the same time, Kiraitu commended Munya, for opting out of the Meru gubernatorial race saying it has made his reelection campaign easier.

“He did not resign when others were resigning which means he has left the county to me, I was preparing for a bruising campaign but now he has made that easy, we will continue with the campaign but not with the same intensity,” Kiraitu added.

The sentiments by Kiraitu on Raila’s possible running mate come after reports emerged that Raila’s team is worried that there is no strong candidate in Mt Kenya for the position.

Reports allege that a section of Jubilee insiders is now pushing President Uhuru Kenyatta to widen his net beyond the GEMA community saying those who were being fronted had failed to pull their own weight.

“There is a serious but silent war over that position of running mate. It is agreeable that the post should go to Mt Kenya, but who is the right candidate?

“Who among our generals have proved that they are worth so far? Who would have any value beyond Uhuru’s effort? That is where the war is, and expect this to erupt soon because some of the people being described as front runners are seen to be paper tigers,” a high-ranking Azimio strategist from President Uhuru’s region told the People Daily Newspaper.
