Mombasa tycoon-cum-politician Suleiman Shahbal has shared details of his high school days, and how he was humiliated by a school prefect for being poor.

In a Throwback Thursday (TBT) photo, Shahbal recalled how he struggle to go through his secondary school education.

“When I was in Form 1 at Nairobi School, I could not afford a new school jacket. I, therefore, got a second-hand blazer from my fellow student, put a new badge and yellow hand stripes on it. The next day, I wore my self-made school jacket and stood on the parade where I was approached by a prefect,

“He called out my name and started making fun of me. He asked where I got the second-hand blazer. He knew I could not afford one. I was young and I felt humiliated as that was his intention. I put on a brave face and explained myself,” Shahbal said.

The Mombasa tycoon also revealed that he has given a job to the prefect who humiliated him in school because he could afford to buy a new school blazer.

“Fast forward, 30 years later, that same prefect came to me asking for a job, and I gave him one. Moral of the story? It is not important where you come from, it is where you are going,” he wrote.

Suleiman Shahbal is a renowned businessman from Mombasa County, who is the CEO of Gulf African Bank and Gulf Energies company.

The Mombasa tycoon is eyeing the Mombasa gubernatorial position, aiming to succeed Governor Hassan Joho.

In his bid to win the coastal vote, Suleiman Shahbal joined the ODM Party on June 13.

This is after ditching Jubilee Party, which he used to unsuccessfully contest for the gubernatorial position in the 2017 General Election.

Before joining Jubilee, Shahbal was a die-hard of the ODM party.
