Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has been tossed into the frying pan after indirectly likening the catholic religion to a cult while discussing his former party Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
During the JKL show on on Citizen TV Wednesday, August 12, Duale said that the ODM Party is a cult-like catholic church.
The sentiments by the former National Assembly majority leader sparked uproar from ODM supporters and Kenyans on Twitter, demanding an apology from the vocal legislator.
“ODM is a cult, nobody can speak. Why did I leave in 2009? It is a cult, it is like the catholic church, the pope, structures ” the Garissa Township MP said.
The Garissa Township MP, perhaps on realising his mistake later, tried to issue a clarification through a tweet that was seen to be more of a defence than an apology.
“My remark was in reference to the ODM party and not the Catholic Church as a cult. I have tremendous respect for the Catholic Church and its elaborate structures,
” I am a man of faith who respects all the teachings of other religions,” Aden Duale defended himself in a tweet.
ODM secreatary general Edwin Sifuna was among the first people to take on the vocal Ruto allie through social media.
“As an ODM Party life member and fully baptized and confirmed member of the Catholic Church,
“I take great exception to the comparison by Duale of these institutions with cults. Dual must apologise and forthwith respect each one’s freedom of association and worship,” Sifuna wrote on twitter
Kenyans on Twitter joined in criticosing the MP for making such disparaging remarks againstthe Catholic church, yet it is the same avenue that his Tanga Tanga brigade goes to campaign.
