East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Florence Jematia Sergon has been arrested by detectives after she threatened to buy guns for Baringo residents to help them fight off bandits.

Jematia was arrested on Wednesday. February 2, at her home in Lang’ata, Nairobi, and taken to Nairobi Area police station for processing.

The MP has been on the run after she was summoned by National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to record a statement over her alleged inciteful utterance.

On Tuesday, February 1, police led by Baringo County Commissioner Abdirizak Jaldesa had launched a manhunt for the MP to record the statement.

“The MP has gone underground after we summoned her to appear before the committee. We have sufficient evidence to charge her with incitement to violence,” Jeldesa said.

Speaking in Baringo on Monday, January 31, the legislator who is associated with Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party is said to have threatened to start a funds drive to purchase guns for the locals to defend themselves against bandits.

“We need a pay bill number now to collect funds to purchase guns. If people can afford motorcycles, then they can afford guns as well.

“Local leaders should also allocate funds to the same to solve this menace if the government is reluctant to hear our cries,” Jematia told locals.

The area is prone to banditry attacks and scores of people have died in the past months in surprise attacks.

Her remarks come barely a week after Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS), Fred Matiang’i, warned political leaders against making inciteful remarks as the country heads into the August 9, General Election.

NCIC has called upon politicians to be mindful of their language during this electioneering year saying inciteful statements might violence in the country.
