MP in trouble for threatening to arm Baringo residents with guns

by Enock Ndayala

Police have summoned the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Florence Jematia Sergon after she threatened to arm Baringo residents with guns.

In a video that is doing rounds on social media platforms, Sergon, who has declared interests to vie for the Baringo Women Representative seat in the forthcoming General Election was captured condemning the National Police Service over the skyrocketing cases of insecurity in the region.

Speaking in Baringo on Monday, January 31, the legislator who is associated with William Ruto’s UDA party said she was more than ready to buy guns and bullets for all Baringo residents to fight bandits.

“They (police officers) are properly safeguarded and even have helmets to protect themselves. We are tired of asking for protection,

“Leo tunataka pay bill number na mimi najitolea leo nataka kununa bunduki households zote zipewe bunduki zijilinde,” Jematia Sergon was captured addressing the residents.

This saw detectives based at Kabarnet summon the lawmaker to record a statement just hours after West Pokot Senator and the Leader of Majority in the Senate, Samuel Poghisio urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to intervene.

“This is an EALA MP inviting citizens in Baringo to buy guns and ammunition. Jematia has stooped too low. I wish to caution leaders against seeking elective seats by making such reckless statements. Let’s work for peace,” Poghisio said in a Tweet seen by Kivumbi.co.ke.

The area is prone to banditry attacks and scores of people have died in the past months in surprise attacks.

Her remarks come barely a week after Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS), Fred Matiang’i, warned political leaders against making inciteful remarks as the country heads into the August 9, General Election.
