MP Oscar Sudi struggles with English during swearing-in

by Enock Ndayala
Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has criticized a section of Kenyans who study and work abroad.

On Thursday, September 8, all the 290 Members of Parliament (MPs) and 47 senators were sworn-in at the National Assembly.

Members of the 13th Parliament were allowed to take their oath either in Kiswahili or English.

During the swearing-in, Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi decided to use the English language in what appeared that the legislator wanted to prove wrong those who had poked holes in his academic qualifications.

However, it did not settle well with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politician as he struggled with English since he could not fluently read the written oath.

“I Oscar Sudi having been elected the member of National Assembly do swear in the name of might God that I will bear true faith, discharge the people …allege to the faithful… people and republic of Kenya,” Sudi was heard saying.

The struggle by the youthful politician to fluently express himself raised questions not only from those tasked with overseeing the exercise but also from Kenyans who were watching the swearing-in exercise.

This comes just a day after Simon Cherop, a primary school mathematics teacher who reportedly taught Oscar Sudi told the court that the legislator did not complete his primary education.

Cherop, told Milimani Court Magistrate Felix Kombo the legislator who was initially known as Kipchumba Kipletich, dropped out of school in class seven.

“Did you teach Sudi?” Cherop was asked by the prosecution. He replied: “Yes. I taught him Maths in classes 6 and 7.”

In May 2022, Highway High School Principal Patrick Maritim testified against Sudi, arguing that the Kapseret MP did not sit for KCSE exams in that school as he had indicated.

He told the court that Sudi’s name was not in the school’s records.

“According to the records, Sudi did not sit for KCSE exams…Oscar Sudi’s name does not appear anywhere,” Maritim told the court.
