The fear of William Ruto leads to formation of many parties in Mt Kenya

by Nderi Caren

Mt. Kenya politics is apparently being shaped around the fear of deputy president William Ruto’s growing influence ahead of 2022 General Elections.

As the 2022 Genral Election approaches, politicians in the region are aware that Ruto has a huge influence, and he will be a big determinant in the nominations of candidates for various elective posts.

For this reason, Kivumbi.co.ke understands, the politicians are forming political parties to secure nominations for elective seats just in case they are locked out of Ruto’s party, even though they support Ruto’s presidential ambition.

Mwangi Kiunjuri of The Service Party(TSP) is among those who fear Ruto’s influence in the primaries. Through TSP, Kiunjuri aims at fronting candidates for other elective seats, except for the Presidency.

“It is only a fool who will go into 2022 to be subjected to the tricks that happen during nominations, where people were literally plucked out of the contest not by the power of voters but the personalities seated in office,” the former Agriculture CS told the Daily Nation.

Their worries come from their past experience, where Ruto allegedly orchestrated the defeat of some candidates in the 2017 General Election for fear that they would not favour his presidential ambition.

One powerful politician who is said to have suffered the strike from DP Ruto is former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo.

“We all know that (William) Ruto rigged us out in search for a new 2022 team that would be submissive to him.. a team that would not ask him to cede state power(should he be president) to Mt Kenya that is commensurate with their numbers,” Kabogo explained.

The Parties that are sprouting are also taking advantage of the diminishing popularity of the Jubilee Party in the region.

Other than Kiunjuri’s TSP the other sprouting parties which might shape Mt Kenya politics include;

  1. People’s Empowernment Party (PEP) – Led by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
  2. Party of National Unity (PNU) – Led by Agriculture CS Peter Munya.
  3. The National Democrats – Led by billionaire Thuo Mathenge.
  4. Kenya National Congress – Associated with former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth.
  5. Narc Kenya – Led by martha Karua.
  6. Usawa Party – Led by Muranga Governor Mwangi Wa Iria.
