Musalia Mudavadi: Kenya Kwanza to scrap off CBC if forms next government

by Enock Ndayala

ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi has promised to scrap off the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) should the Kenya Kwanza Alliance coalition form the next government.

He said the programme was implemented without genuine consultation with stakeholders adding that the new education system is a big burden to parents.

“The controversial Competence-Based-Curriculum of education will be scraped once the Ruto/Mudavadi government takes power in August,” he said on Twitter.

While terming the CBC as ‘an academic frustration to Kenyan parents’ Mudavadi said it was instigated with a rush.

Under the new system, elementary education is divided into pre-primary and primary education, taking two and six years respectively. Junior secondary starts from Grade Seven up to Grade Nine.

The pioneer class of the CBC is currently in Grade 5 and will transit to Grade 6 in April this year, which also marks the end of primary school.

In the curriculum, learners will sit Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) at the end of Grades 4, 5, and 6 to form the final mark at the end of primary school.

Last year, a section of parents raised their concerns on how they were angered with what they termed as increasing demands the system had weighed on them.

But Education Cabinet secretary George Magoha is on record stating that the government will ensure the recently rolled out system is fully implemented.

This comes at a time when the new State department overseeing the implementation of CBC is on to a rough start after the Treasury reduced its allocation for the year starting July 2022.

The Treasury has allocated the Implementation of Curriculum Reforms department KSh 339.9 million against a funding request of KSh 911.9 million.

The budget will cover a period when the CBC moves to Grade 6, marking the end of primary school and the rollout of the new system to junior secondary school (Grade seven in 2023).
