Musalia Mudavadi party picks a Kikuyu to be secretary-general in bid to win over Mt Kenya votes

The Amani National Congress (ANC) party has picked its Secretary General from Mt Kenya region in what can be viewed as a bid to win over Mt Kenya votes in the 2022 General Election.

On Thursday, September 23, the ANC party-appointed lawyer Simon Kamau Gikuru as its new Secretary General to fill the position that was left vacant since August 2020 when Barrack Muluka resigned, a move that sparked mixed feelings from some of the party’s supporters in the western region.

While defending the appointment of Gikuru, ANC deputy party leader Ayub Savula said that a section of Mt Kenya leaders led by NyeriCounty Governor Mutahi Kahiga had asked Musalia Mudavadi to appoint ANC Secretary-General from Mt Kenya if he truly wanted to win over Mt Kenya votes.

“We did consultations. I want this to reach the people in the countryside. While we were in Nyeri, area Governor Mutahi Kahiga sat down with Musalia Mudavadi and told him that the huge voting bloc will only work with ANC if the party will pick a new Secretary General from the region,” Savula said.

Savula who is also the Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency said the party has been longing to work with the GEMA community in the 2022 General Election.

He said that even though the ANC’s efforts to court Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru to be its party’s kingpin in Mt Kenya failed, the party still has got support from Kirinyaga residents.

“Despite the fact that my efforts to convince Waiguru to join ANC failed, we still have the support of the people of Kirinyaga,” Savula added.

On his appointment, the Makerere University graduate  said that he will work hand in hand with other party officials and members of ANC to ensure that the “vision and dream of the party is achieved.”

Gakuru once served as the President of Makerere Law Society, a revered students association.

He has previously worked as a legal officer for the Alliance Party of Kenya elections board before being elected chairman of the Jubilee Party in Murang’a County.
